Accutane is a prescription medication used to alleviate symptoms of severe acne. The drug was once used in chemotherapy treatments before being used to treat acne. The popular drug was developed by Hoffman La Roche. Accutane created $1.2 billion of revenue per year at its height of sales.
The drug was made of a synthetic Vitamin A and gave clients their desired results within months. Accutane worked by inhibiting oil glands and slowed the reproduction of skin cells. The acne medication was initially intended for extreme acne. However, some physicians used the drug for milder cases of acne. In these instances, the associated side effects often outweighed the benefits of the drug.
Some of the most common side effects included suicidal tendencies, depression, miscarriages, pain in the back and joints, stroke, heart attack, vision problems, inflammatory bowel disease, bone less, seizures, anaphylaxis, psychosis, lowered white blood cell count, allergic vaculitis, liver damage, erectile dysfunction, alopecia, weakened skin and seizures.
