Accutane was originally developed for the treatment of acne. Accutane acted on the oil gland as a synthetic form of vitamin A, inhibiting oil production. However, in addition to controlling the oil gland, Accutane also inhibits cell growth and reproduction, depleting the entire body (not just skin) of moisture. Originally prescribed for only extreme cases of acne, Accutane proved to be an effective acne treatment, clearing the skin in a short period of time. The drug became widely prescribed to even milder cases of acne, exposing many to side effects.
Some who have taken Accutane feel that they were not made fully aware of the potential risks. The risks associated with Accutane can be severe. Some side effects include stroke, seizures, heart attack, bone loss, liver damage, and irritable bowel syndrome (which can lead to Chrohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Problems with the skin and vision can also result, and in some cases Accutane has been known to affect mental health: it can cause psychosis, suicidal tendencies, depression, and aggressive behavior. Other problems, such as joint and muscle pain and ringing in the ear, may not be as severe, but they are side effects an Accutane user should be aware of.
Accutane can be incredibly dangerous for pregnant women, and can cause miscarriage or birth defects. Women should be warned of these risks prior to taking Accutane. If conception occurs when taking the medication, continued treatment should be stopped, and the woman needs to seek medical attention. For women who were not warned about these additional risks, they may have cause to file a lawsuit.
There is a limited period of time where lawsuits against Accutane can be filed. This is known as the statue of limitations, and can vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of injury, the age of the person making the charges, and the state in which the injury occurred and where the lawsuit is filed. Under Tennessee law, the statute of limitations begins to run on a minor’s eighteenth birthday, so if you are underage the time of injury, you may still be entitled to compensation. Once the statute of limitations has passed, it may not be possible to file a lawsuit or receive compensation. In order to best understand this, you may need to meet with a qualified lawyer.
