Accutane, a synthetic derivative of vitamin A, manufactured and distributed by Hoffman La Roche for acne and other skin eruptions, was an effective deterrent to outbreaks due to its ability to reduce the size of sebaceous glands that cause the skin conditions. Lawsuits continue to be filed against the manufacturer and the health care providers who prescribed the drug to their patients without due warning as to Accutane's possible adverse side effects leading to a host of maladies, including inflammatory bowel disease, suicidal ideations in those never having experienced them before, suicide, birth defects, and miscarriages.
Because of the grave risks to pregnant women, after so many had miscarried and so many others had brought severely deformed babies into the world as a result of Accutane's ill effects, the FDA finally made it mandatory for women to sign an agreement to be implemented as a risk management program whereby the woman pledged to know of the potential damages that might be incurred from the use of the orally ingested medication.
